Osteopathy
What is Osteopathy ?
Osteopathy is a recognised system of diagnosis and treatment which is complimentary to medicine. It is distinctive in the way it recognises much of the pain and disability we suffer stems from abnormalities in the function of the body structure, as well as damage casued by disease and trauma. Osteopathy corrects problems in the body frame, making it easier for the body to function normally and healthily, and reducing the likelihood of further symptoms.
Procedures used in Osteopathy for diagnosis and treatment promote good health by correcting mechanical problems within and between the muscles, bones, ligaments, organs, and fascia (the fascia is connective tissue holding other structures in place).
The name osteopathy is derived from two Greek words, osteon (bone) and pathos (to suffer), the literal translation of which is ‘suffering of the bone’. This can cause some confusion, with a lot of people thinking that an osteopath can treat ‘bone disorders’ only, rather than the entire musculo-skeletal system.
A major part of the training of an osteopath is in developing a detailed understanding of human anatomy and physiology. For the osteopath, the physical integrity of the whole body is seen as one of the most important factors in health and disease. Rather than ‘bone specialists’, osteopaths look at the body as a whole , in order to alleviate problems.
What conditions do Osteopaths treat?
