Nail Care

When filing nails, always file in one direction only. Do not use a sawing action as this will increase the risk of the nail splitting and flaking.

Always use an emery board rather than a metal nail file; the metal file will build up heat in the nail and will damage the nail tip.

In the winter months , dry splitting nails and cuticles is a common problem for both men and women. We recommend regular manicures; for home care, the use of warm almond oil massaged into cuticles and nails will combat this problem and encourage strong nail growth.

To protect your nails from discolouring, apply a base coat and then apply the coloured layer. After painting on the colour of your choice, apply a top coat to prevent chipping. Our top products are Essie Three-Way Glaze, Essie Non-Yellowing Top Coat and Essie Super-Duper Top Coat. Essie is possibly the premier nail products company in the world.

The most common cause of ingrowing toenails is incorrect trimming of the nail. Leaving sharp corners, trimming too closely to the skin, or leaving the edges of the nail with a ragged finish is inviting problems. Trim the nail straight across, following the natural shape of the nail, then file gently to leave a smooth edge and ease off any sharp corners.

Ideally, use a nail polish remover that does not contain acetone; it is better for the condition of your nails. The reason for trying to avoid acetone is that it will dry your cuticles. Acetone-free removers are better for your skin, but suffer from the problem of taking a long time to remove polish.

For the fastest removal, use acetone -- but use it carefully. Wrap cotton on the end of an orange wood stick, dip it in the remover then swab the polish off your nail, avoiding your cuticle area. This is especially important when you are using remover to remove oils from a clean nail bed, before applying polish. (Always clean your nail with remover before applying polish -- it will make your polish last longer!).

A remover that contains aloe and lavender will be easier on the cuticles. It is important to care for nails, as rough and constant treatments may lead to cracked, brittle or stained nails.  Nails require proteins and minerals just as the skin does, therefore it is beneficial to use a nail polish remover that suit’s the nails needs.

Paint newly-polished nails with Seche Vite Fast Dry top Coat (reputedly the best top coat in the world!). Place some under the free edge of the nail; this will prevent chipping of the polish and splitting of the nails.
